EMDR THERAPY FOR MOTHERS IN MASSACHUSETTS
Private-Pay EMDR Therapy for Mothers in Massachusetts
More time and flexibility for trauma-focused therapy that doesn’t always fit neatly into a traditional therapy hour.
Trauma Therapy That Leaves Room for the Work
Motherhood can bring parts of our past into focus in ways we did not expect. An experience that once seemed manageable may suddenly feel different when we see it through the eyes of a parent. Old relationship patterns may become more visible, and experiences we once minimized can become harder to ignore.
A difficult pregnancy, birth, loss, divorce, family conflict, or
another experience may also continue to affect how we feel in our
bodies, relationships, and everyday lives.
At Mom Over Matter, I offer private-pay EMDR therapy for mothers in Massachusetts who want a flexible, individualized approach to trauma-focused care.
Sessions are available in 60-, 75-, and 90-minute formats, with longer EMDR intensive options considered on a case-by-case basis. The goal is not to rush the work. It is to create enough time and flexibility to do it thoughtfully.

UNDERSTANDING EMDR
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured form of psychotherapy that may include bilateral stimulation, preparation, memory processing, attention to thoughts and emotions, body awareness, grounding, and integration.
EMDR is often associated with PTSD, but trauma does not always come from one clearly identifiable event. Sometimes the experiences that continue to affect us developed gradually through childhood, relationships, chronic stress, attachment disruptions, pregnancy or birth experiences, loss, or repeated periods of feeling unsafe or overwhelmed.
At Mom Over Matter, EMDR may also be integrated with IFS-informed work, attachment-based approaches, and somatic therapy depending on your needs and preferences.

Why Motherhood Can Bring Old Experiences Back to the Surface
Sometimes becoming a mother changes the way we understand our own
history.
You may notice yourself reacting strongly to situations with your children without fully understanding why. You may begin thinking differently about the way you were parented. Experiences you once minimized may become harder to ignore.
You may recognize patterns in relationships that you do not want to repeat with your own family, or find yourself wanting to better understand why certain situations feel so emotionally charged.
Other mothers seek trauma therapy after experiences connected directly with motherhood, including pregnancy complications, loss, a frightening birth, NICU hospitalization, divorce, relationship changes, or another major transition.
You do not necessarily need one dramatic event or one perfectly clear memory for past experiences to continue influencing the present.

Therapy Doesn’t Always Fit Neatly Into an Insurance Hour
Traditional therapy is often organized around a standard therapy hour. That structure works well for many people and many kinds of therapeutic work.
Trauma processing, however, does not always unfold according to a predictable schedule.
We may need time at the beginning of a session to check in, get grounded, understand what is happening in your nervous system, and decide whether processing makes sense that day.
During EMDR, unexpected memories, emotions, body sensations, or protective parts may emerge. At the end of the session, adequate time for grounding and integration also matters.
Private-pay treatment provides greater flexibility in deciding together what session length and treatment structure make sense for you.

Why 75- and 90-Minute Sessions Can Help
A longer session gives us more room to follow the work rather than constantly watching the clock.
Arrive & Settle In
Allow adequate time to check in, get grounded, and understand what your nervous system needs that day.
Stay With the Work
Follow an important memory, emotional response, or body sensation without stopping simply because the traditional therapy hour is ending.
Ground & Integrate
Leave adequate time to process what emerged, reconnect with the present, and end the session intentionally rather than abruptly.
A MORE CONCENTRATED FORMAT
What About EMDR Intensives?
For some clients, even a 75- or 90-minute appointment may not provide enough uninterrupted time for the work they want to address.
EMDR intensives use a longer block of focused therapeutic time rather than limiting processing to a traditional weekly appointment.
They may be worth discussing when there is a particular experience or treatment goal you want to focus on, when weekly scheduling is difficult, or when a more concentrated format makes sense clinically.
An intensive is not about rushing through trauma or trying to accomplish months of therapy in one appointment. Preparation, assessment, grounding, pacing, and integration remain important.
EMDR intensives are offered on a case-by-case basis depending on your history, current needs, treatment goals, and scheduling availability.

What Does EMDR Therapy Look Like?
EMDR is structured, but the process is individualized.
We generally begin by understanding what is bringing you to therapy, your history, the patterns or symptoms affecting you now, and what you hope will be different.
Before trauma processing begins, we spend time preparing. This can include learning grounding strategies, becoming more familiar with your nervous system, identifying resources and supports, and discussing how you respond when overwhelmed.
From there, we work collaboratively to identify experiences, memories, present-day triggers, beliefs, emotions, or body sensations that may be useful to address.
EMDR sessions may include periods of bilateral stimulation as well as conversation, reflection, body awareness, IFS-informed work, grounding, and integration.
QUESTIONS ABOUT EMDR
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to have PTSD to consider EMDR?
No specific diagnosis is required simply to have a conversation about whether EMDR may be appropriate. During your consultation and assessment, we can discuss what is bringing you to therapy and whether my approach fits your needs.
Do I need to remember one specific traumatic event?
Not necessarily. Present-day triggers, emotions, beliefs, body sensations, and patterns can all provide useful information when exploring treatment.
Does every EMDR session need to be 75 or 90 minutes?
No. Mom Over Matter offers 60-, 75-, and 90-minute appointments. The appropriate session length can depend on your goals and the kind of work planned for that appointment.
Can EMDR be done through telehealth?
Telehealth options are available for clients in Massachusetts when clinically appropriate.
What if I’m not sure whether I need EMDR?
You do not have to decide that before contacting me. A complimentary 15-minute consultation gives us an opportunity to discuss what you are looking for and whether working together may be a good fit.

I am also a mother. I understand that mental health does not exist separately from parenting, relationships, physical health, time constraints, identity, and the many responsibilities mothers carry.
My goal is to create a warm, collaborative environment where we can understand not only what you are experiencing, but how your past and present experiences connect—and what meaningful change might look like for you.
